2004-05 SEMESTER ROTC ACTIVITIES:

LTC Paul Krajeski and his staff are planning the coming year’s R.O.T.C. activities. In addition to the annual Cadet Military Ball (to take place in February 2005) and the annual Cramers Saber Battalion Awards event, the following will also take place:

            - Fall Semester "Icebreaker" Social (SEP)

- Army 10-miler Road Race, Washington, D.C.(OCT)

- "Adventure" Training: Paintball, Mountain Hiking (OCT)

- West Point Fortifications Staff Ride (NOV)

- Army vs. Air Force football at West Point (6 NOV)

- Bataan Memorial Death March (MAR)

- Gettysburg Staff Ride (TBD)

With so many important events during the coming year, the ROTC Alumni Association will continue to do all it can to support the cadets and cadre.  The “bottom line” is that there are expenses involved in all of these programs.  We are very thankful to so many ROTC alumni and friends of the ROTC program who have continued to make donations so we can provide  support to LTC Krajeski, his staff and our future officers.

Thanks to your donations (completely apart from the “Endowment Funds” we have raised) we have already taken care of the purchase of the tickets to the Army vs. Air Force football game at Michie Stadium on 6 November.

In addition, the ROTC Alumni Association will again entertain nominations for the URI ARMY R.O.T.C. “HALL OF FAME”.  There will be a new plan for the Hall of Fame installation ceremony for the coming year.  We will induct the 2004-05 honorees as part of the May 2005 commissioning ceremonies.  Keep in touch with our alumni newsletter link in our website for updates on all of these important events.

THE TRADITION CONTINUES……

On 23 May 2004 the tradition of military leadership training at the URI Cramer Sabers Battalion continued – Eight of the Army’s newest officers raised their right hands and took their oaths.  General Leon LaPorte ’68 led our Second Lieutenants as they accepted their commissions in the US Army.

Shown below in front of venerable Keaney Gymnasium are the following officers of the Class of 2004: (left to right):  2LT  Katharine Zacharria, 2LT Felix Yam, 2LT Vanna Nhem, 2LT Jordan Melei, 2LT David Dunphy, 2LT Danielle Dippolino, 2LT Anthony DiFruscio, 2LT Peter Anzovino

GENERAL LEON & JUDY LaPORTE ’68 RETURN TO KINGSTON

The month of May was a memorable one for the Army R.O.T.C. and university-wide family.  General Leon Laporte ’68 and his wife Judy traveled from Seoul, Korea to participate in the annual R.O.T.C. commissioning ceremonies on campus.   General LaPorte was also the recipient of an honorary Doctoral degree during commencement ceremonies on the quadrangle the afternoon of 23 May 2004.  Shown below is URI President Robert L. Carothers greeting General LaPorte and Judy on their arrival in front of Keaney Gymnasium.

General LaPorte delivered the keynote address during the morning’s commissioning ceremonies.  He spoke of the tradition of military leadership and the strong foundation all of the Cramer Sabers Battalion cadets receive.

The morning’s  program was all the more memorable as the family of former URI Assistant Professor of Military Science  LTC Richard S. Schott was on hand to unveil Colonel Schott’s name as the eighteenth on the Vietnam Memorial Bench in front of Keaney.  LTC Schott was killed in action in Vietnam on 4 April 1972.  Earlier this year the remains of LTC Schott were identified in Vietnam  by a forensic team from the US Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii.  LTC Richard Simpson Schott’s remains were returned to the United States and were buried with full military honors in Sheperdstown, West Virginia on 4 April 2004.

Pictured below is the family of LTC Schott as they unveil the name of LTC Schott on the memorial bench.  From left to right:  URI President Robert Carothers,  General Leon LaPorte ’68, Mrs. Joan Kartley Schott, Susan Schott (daughter) and  Alex (grandson):

1LT John Chiappone ’03 has recently returned to his home base in Germany after a TDY tour as part of a security element in Normandy during the 60th anniversary activities of D-Day.  His recent message:  “Sounds like the (Alumni Golf) Tourney will be a great time. I found out that I take my line PLT in 45 days.  I am taking 1st PLT here and we have 2 1/2 months on Green cycle training this summer in preparation for a deployment sometime in the fall.  We are not sure where but rumors say Afghanistan.  I will keep you updated.  “Talk” with you soon.  LT C.”  Lt Chiappone can be reached at email:  john.m.chiappone@us.army.mil

(Ed. Note:  Lt. Chiappone is one of our 18 hole/tee sponsors for this year’s ROTC Alumni Golf Tournament;  THANKS, John!)

LTC Cheryl Poppe ’87 has been busy in her new command assignment with the Massachusetts Army National Guard.  She recently contacted us with the following:  “I fear I cannot join you on 11 Sept in Kingston as that is the day I leave for NGAUS conference in Las Vegas, followed by a trip to the Grand Canyon (that is if my detachments don't leave in the fall). Until that time, there is no vacation--July is jam-packed  --We are supporting the (Boston Pops) Esplanade, then 2 weeks in Fort Bragg, then we are supplying 500 troops to the Democratic National Convention in Boston.  Most of my full time people are taking leave in August, so I will hold down the fort with hopes of getting to the Southwest successfully in September after seeing my youngest head to Framingham State for her freshman year.  Give my best to all, Cheryl”

Our congratulations to COL Kent Bolster on his recent completion of the resident US Army War College course at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.

Former URI Professor of Military Science LTC (Ret) Bob McGowan has recently been in touch with us.  He writes:  “my wife Shelagh is the Republican candidate for the Rhode Island Senate District 35 seat, running against the Democratic incumbent Mike Lenihan.  The district covers North Kingstown west of Route 1, and north of Essex Street, as well as most of East Greenwich and a little of Warwick.  Would you mind including a note about that in your next newsletter?  Information about her and the campaign can be found on www.shelagh.org.  The early response to her candidacy has been very encouraging; many people support Governor Carcieri, and realize that he can’t get things done with a Senate comprised of 32 Democrats and only 6 Republicans.  Thanks, Bob.

Bob has also been good enough to sponsor a hole for our upcoming golf tournament.  Thanks, Bob and please stay in touch.  Bob can be reached at:
